The name of the farmstead P\u00e5vals can be traced back to around 1695, when P\u00e5l Andersson moved from the neighbouring island Asterholma to Lappo and took over the farmstead from the farmer Mats Henriksson. Mats\u2019s son had inherited a farm in Br\u00e4nd\u00f6 after his aunt. P\u00e5vals has remained in the same family ever since. <\/p>

P\u00e5l Andersson\u2019s younger brother, Mickel Andersson, soon followed and moved to P\u00e5vals in 1697. However, war and difficult times followed and P\u00e5l died while fleeing to Sweden. This mean it was Mickel Andersson who took over the farming of the land after peace was restored in 1721. The division of the farmstead in the 1750s meant that the property was split between Mickel\u2019s son G\u00f6ran Mickelsson and P\u00e5l\u2019s grandson P\u00e5l P\u00e5lsson. <\/p>

P\u00e5l P\u00e5lsson\u2019s half later came to be called \u201cMorbrors\u201d (\u2018the uncle\u2019s place\u2019), where the village\u2019s oldest building – a h\u00e4rbre – still stands as a memory of times past. A h\u00e4rbre was a small separate building mainly used for storing grain, but it could also provide sleeping space for farm workers during the summer months. <\/p>

At the beginning of the 20th century, the farmer and boatbuilder Anders Jakob T\u00f6rnroos (1835\u20131908) divided P\u00e5vals among his eight children (locally known as the \u201c\u00e5ttam\u00e4nningarna\u201d). This led to the construction of new farmsteads outside the village centre. His daughter Cecilia built \u201cNordmans\u201d together with her husband, the primary school teacher Emil Nordman. Krispinus, who was a coastal skipper, built \u201cBy\u00e4ngs\u201d. Felix, also a skipper, moved to \u201cT\u00f6rnroses\u201d. Bror remained at P\u00e5vals, while the youngest son Jean \u2013 a schoolteacher and later a member of the \u00c5land Parliament (1926\u201331) \u2013 established \u201cSellbo\u201d. The daughter Vilhelmina married into the neighbouring farm \u201cGrannas\u201d, Ida moved to Kumlinge, and the youngest daughter Amanda married the shoemaker and galeas skipper Hjalmar \u00d6berg at \u201c\u00d6bergs\u201d. <\/p>

Seafaring has always been important in the archipelago, and boatbuilding was a common everyday skill, not seen as anything more remarkable than making one\u2019s own tools and household items. Anders Jakob T\u00f6rnroos was a highly skilled carpenter. Craftsmanship, determination, and a strong connection to the sea are all a living heritage of P\u00e5vals. <\/p>

Karl Anders T\u00f6rnroos (1907\u20131985) carried this heritage into the modern era. \u201cP\u00e5vals Kalle\u201d was a farmer, family man, merchant, and manager of the Lappo cooperative store (Lappo handelslag), which in 1950 moved from P\u00e5vals to a new building down by the harbour. His hard work together with his wife Sally also helped turn Pellas\u2019s main building into a popular guesthouse for summer visitors. The family\u2019s youngest child, the engineer and seaman Ingmar T\u00f6rnroos (1939\u20132026), owned and managed P\u00e5vals up until the present day. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
